CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat attended an extended meeting of the party’s State committee here on Saturday. The two-day special meeting was convened to discuss issues related to the February 14 Assembly election and organisational matters.
Besides Mr. Karat, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, State committee secretary Bijan Dhar and a host of senior leaders are slated to address audience at closed-door sessions. Sources in the party said the special session was an offshoot of two meetings of the State committee held after the Assembly election.
Though the CPI(M) won the election by a huge margin, certain uncomfortable situations within the party led to the defeat of at least three Left candidates and reduced vote shares in some areas. The party has already acted tough against a number of senior leaders and removed them pending enquiry.
Sources said the fall in vote-share in tribal areas, the backbone of the party’s support base in Tripura, had worried the party.
