Kapil Mishra meets DU V-C over notices to girl students

May 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:21 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Delhi Jal Board chairman Kapil Mishra on Wednesday met Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi in connection with notices sent to inmates of a girls’ hostel who had protested against water shortage. After the meeting, Mr. Mishra tweeted: “Met DU VC, he has assured me that notices to hostel girls will be withdrawn [sic].”

Inmates of DU’s Under Graduate Hostel for Girls had protested after there was no water supply to their hostel for nearly two months. Following this, the hostel Provost wrote to their parents saying their protest was a “violation of rules” and gave the hostel a “bad reputation”.

The Delhi Jal Board chief also submitted a letter to Mr. Tyagi.

“It is unforgivable and unpardonable that despite the Delhi Jal Board’s efforts to ensure proper water supply in the city, our students were suffering,” the letter sent by Mr. Mishra stated.

“However, in another act of reprehensible and inexcusable oppressive nature, a group of DU students protested over lack of water and the parents of some of them have been sent a letter by hostel administration. Has DU’s Women’s hostel, along with its complete lack of administration which deprived the students their right to water, also waived the right to freedom of speech?” it added.
