Uttar Pradesh has cancelled the public holiday on the death anniversary of Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram on October 9.

A circular has been issued to the District Magistrates in this regard, official sources said here on Saturday.

In fact, Azamgarh DM Pranjal Yadav issued a statement and said the State has cancelled the public holiday on the death anniversary of Kanshi Ram under the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881, with immediate effect.

The previous Mayawati Government had announced October 9 as public holiday.

The BSP reacted strongly against the U.P. Government’s decision. “It is yet another example of the anti-Dalit sentiments of the Government,” said Leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha Swami Prasad Maurya.

Terming the move as “unnecessary”, Mr. Maurya said the Government should desist from showing disrespect to great men.

The BSP has also planned a massive rally in Lucknow on October 9. - PTI
