Another person accused of allegedly raping a Catholic nun in Kandhamal district of Odisha during the 2008 communal riots was arrested by Odisha Crime Branch sleuths on Monday.
According to sources, the accused, Narayan Mohanty alias Dilu, was rounded up in the crowded Phulbani court area. The State Crime Branch is investigating this much-publicised rape case that had rocked the nation. According to sources in the Crime Branch, with this recent arrest the number of persons arrested in this case has gone up to 27. The last accused arrested by the Crime Branch in this case was Apurba Raut, who was nabbed in May.
As per the Crime Branch officials, Narayan was a small time trader in the Raikia area. He had come to Phulbani on Monday for some work and the sleuths tracking him managed to nab him.
The nun had been allegedly raped on August 25, 2008, at K. Nuagaon of Kandhamal district by a mob while the whole Kandhamal district and some other parts of Odisha were reeling under severe communal violence, which had erupted after VHP leader Swami Lakshamananada Saraswati was murdered on Aug 23, 2008. At least 38 people were killed during this communal riot and hundreds were rendered homeless.
