A statue of veteran CPI (M) leader Jyoti Basu was damaged and smeared with tar by miscreants on Tuesday night in the Salkia area of the State’s Howrah district.
A senior leader of the Howrah district committee of the Left Front alleged that Trinamool Congress activists were behind the desecration, just days ahead of the civic polls in the area scheduled for Friday.
Condemning the act Surjya Kanta Mishra, Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly and also a Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M) said bombs were hurled during the attack on the statue.
“I think that some ruling party activists are responsible for the act because if any one else had done it the police would have definitely taken action,” said Biplab Majumdar, leader of the CPI(M) and convener of the district Left Front in Howrah “When the local people staged a road blockade in protest against the incident the police promptly removed them. But they [police] were nowhere to be seen when the statue of Jyoti Basu was disfigured,” Mr. Majumdar alleged..
