J&K hospital sealed for abortion on wrong patient

July 29, 2014 12:57 am | Updated 12:57 am IST - SRINAGAR:

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday sealed JK Medicity, a private hospital in the Chhani area of Jammu, after it became clear during preliminary inquiry on a complaint that the staff had terminated the pregnancy of a patient on “mistaken identity” over the weekend. A woman from Rajouri, who was reportedly in an advanced stage of pregnancy, was “erroneously” put through the procedure instead of another patient admitted for miscarriage.

The order issued by Director of Health Services (DHS) Jammu as the Supervisory Authority under J&K Nursing Homes & Clinical Establishment [Registration and Licensing] Act, 1963, suspended the hospital’s licence with immediate effect.

Commissioner-Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Gazzanfer Hussain told The Hindu that he would proceed against the hospital under rules. Police sources said that a criminal matter of causing the death of a foetus by medical negligence has also been registered against the hospital staff.

A doctor and a woman multipurpose health worker have been arrested.
