The Government of India has recently approved the creation of 1281 new posts at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, including 660 new nurses.

Posts for 75 new doctors, 200 postgraduate residents, fellows and nursing tutors and over 200 new posts for B and C grade staff have also been created, Director of JIPMER T. S. Ravikumar told The-Hindu on the sidelines of the function to start the golden jubilee year of JIPMER.

The institution would soon be advertising for 490 new nurses. Apart from the posts like doctors and nurses, which require special skill, steps would be taken to ensure that the other posts are filled with local people. Even work that was to be contracted or outsourced would be taken from the Union Territory, he said.

For the nurses and doctors, they would be conducting national-level examinations to determine the candidates hired.

For the nurses, around 420 of them would be new recruits, while the other posts would be filled through promotions.

“Many of these posts have been pending since 2009 and finally, on July 12, we received approval. The new posts are a result of the addition of various new facilities at JIPMER,” he said.

Increase in research funding

Speaking of the increase in external funding for research, Dr. Ravikumar said their external funding had increased from Rs. 1.75 crore to Rs. 20 crore. Among the major projects that are receiving external funding is the Tuberculosis Research Study, sponsored by the National Institute of Health in Bethesda through the Department of Biotechnology in India, which is worth $ 2.5 million. Their diabetes research program with the World Diabetes Foundation is for $ 4,00,000.

National-level projects

Apart from this, they have also received four national-level projects from the Indian Council for Medical Research, which includes the setting up of a Viral Diagnosis Research Centre, a Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) collaborative centre (which is one of four in the country), and a parasitology programme, he said. The tuberculosis programme will be in collaboration with the Puducherry and Tamil Nadu TB officials, as well as district level officials in Cuddalore and Villupuram, to study 4000 patients with TB. The NIH Bethesda staff will be conducting site visits and collaborating on the program.

Collaborations with other colleges

In terms of collaborations with other colleges, JIPMER is in talks with IIT Madras to set up MD-PhD as well as MD-MPH (Masters in Public Health) joint programmes, as well as programmes in health economics and health IT.

They are also looking to collaborate with the Indian Institute of Management to give out joint degrees. JIPMER authorities will be meeting with its Governing Body to discuss the options next week, Dr. Ravikumar added.
