It becomes the second hospital in the Union Territory to obtain the approval

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has received permission from the Union Ministry of Health recently to perform kidney transplantation in its hospital.

Director of JIPMER K.S.V.K. Subba Rao told The Hindu on Thursday that the approval came last month and the hospital was making all arrangements to start the transplant operations as soon as possible.

According to him, the hospital had applied to the Ministry to grant permission to perform kidney transplantations after it completed the recruitment of necessary technical staff, including qualified nephrologists.

Following the application, a team from the Ministry inspected the hospital “two months ago” to check if all necessary facilities were in place.

The approval came after a favourable report from the team.

With this approval, JIPMER becomes the second hospital in the Union Territory, after the Government General Hospital here, to obtain the approval to perform renal transplantation.
