JCO killed in Poonch shelling by Pakistan

A Junior Commissioned Officer was killed and three soldiers were injured in mortar shelling by the Pakistan Army in Poonch district on Sunday morning.

Defence Ministry sources told The Hindu that Pakistani troops opened fire and shelled the Mukhriyan post at Sawajian, prompting the Indian forces to retaliate. Later the Pakistani troops fired mortars, one of which hit Arun Palikar of 8 Mahar regiment, who died instantaneously. The injured soldiers were airlifted to the Northern Command Hospital, Udhampur.

The sources said the firing constituted a breach of the November 2003 ceasefire agreement.

In another incident, an unidentified gunman barged into the house of Border Security Force jawan Mohammad Asrif at Budhal in Rajouri district and opened fired indiscriminately. Aarif and his wife Malika Khatoon were killed and their son was injured, the police said.
