Jayalalithaa sworn in MLA

July 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - CHENNAI:

Following her victory with a thumping majority in the recent Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar by-poll, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday took oath as a Member of Legislative Assembly.

Speaker P. Dhanapal was present at the quick ceremony in which Ms. Jayalalithaa took her oath as Legislator in his chamber at the Secretariat.

It marked Ms. Jayalalithaa’s return as an MLA after nearly 10 months since a trial court in Karnataka convicted her and three others in the disproportionate assets case.

However, the Karnataka High Court acquitted them in May, following which the Karnataka government has moved Supreme Court.

Following her acquittal, Ms. Jayalalithaa contested from R.K. Nagar in north Chennai on June 27 — in a seat made vacant by party member P. Vetrivel’s resignation — and secured a record 88.34 per cent votes in the election which almost all Opposition parties, except the CPI, stayed out of.

On Saturday, the media was not allowed near the Speaker’s chamber, and were asked to wait near the exit gate of the Secretariat, where many AIADMK supporters also lined up to greet Ms. Jayalalithaa as her convoy left the premises.
