One police constable was killed and another injured when Maoists triggered an Improvised Explosive Device blast near the Dharmapenta police camp in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Friday.

The blast took place when a police team from the camp was providing security to an under-construction bridge near Dharmapenta village. The Maoists also opened fire on the police team after the blast. The police team returned the fire, forcing the extremists to beat a retreat, said an officer of the Bastar police.

“Constable Suman Tirki died in the incident and constable Suleman Khaka suffered injuries,” said R.K. Vij, Additional Director General of Police, Anti-Naxal operations, Chhattisgarh.

The Dharmapenta police camp was set up recently on the border of Telangana and Chhattisgarh hampering free movement of the Naxalites in the area.
