The Jharkhand police have recovered a huge cache of explosives in Giridih district, 200 km from Ranchi, from near a culvert in the Belwaghati forest, officials said.

“We acted on specific information that Maoists had stored explosives and they planned to remove it on Monday night. On seeing us, a group of seven people fled the spot. We seized 5.5 quintals of two kinds of explosives kept in 10 bags along with a sealed drum weighing 40 to 45 kg, which may also contain chemicals. We suspect that this was meant to be used by Maoists to prepare improvised explosive devices,” said Kranti Kumar Gharhidesi, Giridih Superintendent of Police.

In November 2012, the CPI (Maoists) ambushed a police vehicle to free eight of their cadres who were being taken from a local court back to the Giridih jail for killing three policemen and a prisoner.
