Hindustan Motors sells scrap to pay wages

Seeks government help sought in enabling closure of foundry divestment

June 03, 2014 12:26 am | Updated November 16, 2021 06:49 pm IST - KOLKATA:

In an effort to provide immediate relief to its workforce, the beleaguered Hindustan Motors on Monday released half-month wages as advance payment to its workers at the Uttarpara plant.

This follows a request from State Labour Minister Purnendu Bose after the first round of bilateral talks on May 29.

The company has sought the State government’s help in enabling closure on the Forge and Foundry divestment, which requires approvals from a consortium of lenders, which in turn will enable it to clear the back log on overdue wages.

The foundry unit employs some 400 people it was learnt.

The cheque and money transfer payment was made late in the day, with workers getting an SMS alert in the afternoon, some workers said. “The company has made the payments,” Mr Bose said.
