After two days of respite from intense cold, some parts of Jammu and Kashmir received heavy snowfall up to three feet and rains which affected normal life in the plains on Saturday.
Snowfall in high altitude areas accompanied with rains in the plains began yesterday evening after January 29, when some parts in the state witnessed it last.
Snow ranging from six inches to three feet was reported from the high altitude areas including hill resorts of Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Yousmarg.
Gulmarg recorded two feet of snow till morning while its peripheral areas witnessed over three feet of snow. Tangmarg recorded one feet of snow rendering slippery condition on Tangmarg-Gulmarg road, which prompted authorities to suspend traffic for several hours on the stretch, officials said.
While the Jawahar tunnel, the gateway to Kashmir and about 200 kms from Jammu, was covered with over one-and-a- half feet of snow, they said, adding it was still snowing heavily in the region.
Baramulla received six inches of snow till this morning.
Nearly one feet of snow was recived in the border areas in Kupwara and Bandipora districts.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Showkat Ahmad Mir said Kupwara-Tangdhar road has been closed for traffic due to heavy snowfall.
The night temperature shot up to 12.7 in Jammu as against 8.2 yesterday. It was 11.4 in Katra and 2.3 in Batote and 1.2 in Bhaderwah.
