On Friday morning several metres of road was washed off following a cloudburst at Jakhol-Sankhri village in Uttarkashi district.

This was one of the several cases of loss of property following heavy rainfall, which have been reported from the district in the past two weeks. Uttarkashi District Magistrate C. Ravishankar said, “There have been no casualties. However, people have reported a cloudburst. Rescue team has been sent to the village to ascertain the extent of damage and help the locals.”

Mr. Ravishankar said that two bridges were washed away in Jamak and Kamar villages and five people got stranded on Thursday, after water level in a local stream increased following heavy rainfall.

“The people have been rescued, but, animals are still stranded. We are planning to build a temporary bridge to rescue the animals,” he said.

Around 100 metres of main road leading to Lamgaon was washed away few days back. The area is cut-off. On Friday, Chief Engineer, Public Works Department, visited the place for assessment. Mr. Ravishankar said a temporary route would be constructed, but, that would take two weeks.

The Gangotri national highway has developed a critical point at Ganganani which is subject to continuous landslips. Mr. Ravishankar said the point has been blocked for nine days due to continuous landslips. Several villages have been cut-off and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel have been sent to the area to look after rescue and relief measures.
