Guwahati turns into fortress for police chiefs’ conclave

November 28, 2014 01:28 pm | Updated 01:28 pm IST - Guwahati:

As many as 35 additional companies of security personnel have been deployed as the city has been turned into a fortress to thwart any attempt by militants to sabotage the two-day 49th annual All-India Conference of DGPs, IGPs and heads of central police organisations organised by the Intelligence Bureau beginning here on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will address the conference, being held for the first time in a venue outside Delhi. While Mr. Singh will be inaugurating it on Saturday, Mr. Modi will be addressing it on Sunday. The Chief Ministers of all North-eastern States will also attend the conference that will discuss issues relating to national security.

Briefing journalists on security measures for the conference, Director General of Police (DGP) Khagen Sarma said all the districts had been put on high alert.

An Intelligence input on militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) sneaking into the city to plant a bomb in a bus has prompted the Assam police to activate every single security apparatus.
