A day after suspected militants attacked a BSNL franchise outlet in Sopore in north Kashmir, killing one person and wounding two others, unidentified gunmen killed a 54-year-old man in his house in Dooru village in Sopore.
The police said that the man had a mobile tower in his compound and that he had been warned by the gunmen to shut down a week ago.
“Ghulam Hassan Dar was shot inside his living room at around 9.30 pm while he was watching a cricket match. His family was in the kitchen at the time of his killing,” Superintendent of Police Abdul Qayoom told The Hindu .
Mr. Qayoom said that Mr. Dar had been warned by unknown gunmen a week ago to shut down the mobile tower in his compound and he had, in fact, shut it down.
“Dar was himself a former militant, who was released in 1998 after serving time in the prison, and his son, Tanvir Ahmad, is a Sarpanch of the village,” Mr. Qayoom said.
