Alarmed by the self-immolation bid by a Nepali right in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation premises, the Gujarat State Human Rights Commission on Thursday sought a detailed report from the municipal body about the incident.
The rights commission has stated that if it is not satisfied by the action taken by the municipal corporation in the incident, it will conduct its own inquiry in the case.
Five members of a Nepali family had set themselves ablaze at the Rajkot Municipal Corporation in Saurashtra region on Wednesday in protest against the move to evict them from a common plot of a housing society which they had occupied illegally decades ago. Three members of the family even succumbed to burn injuries.
According to sources, the family had approached a civil court for respite and when they failed to get any help, they took to the extreme step.
Bandh peaceful
Angry with the incident, the Congress called for a bandh on Thursday. Thanks to tight security, the bandh passed off peacefully.
The Rajkot Mayor has already announced Rs. 5 lakh compensation, while the Congress too has declared Rs. 1 lakh aid for the family. The police has meanwhile lodged a case and started investigations in the incident.
