The Gujarat government scrapped semester system from class IX to XII in science stream and instead reverted to the old exam system which was done away with five years ago.

Now, the Gujarat secondary and higher secondary board will conduct exams for class X and XII while for class IX and XI, the exam will be conducted internally by the respective schools.

The decision of scrapping the semester system was announced by Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, who said that the new system had been implemented with immediate effect as the schools reopened on Monday after the vacation.

Earlier in 2011, the Gujarat government had introduced the semester module for class IX to XII at the instance of the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
