Grenade attack on Kashmir Police headquarters

June 11, 2014 02:55 am | Updated November 16, 2021 06:48 pm IST - SRINAGAR:

Late on Tuesday, suspected militants threw a hand grenade on the office of Additional Director General of Police (Armed Police) Shiv Murari Sahai on the premises of Kashmir Police headquarters at Batmaloo.

Official sources told The Hindu that minutes after Mr. Sahai and Kashmir IGP Abdul Gani Mir had left for a meeting at Police Control Room, unidentified militants carried out a grenade attack, the first on the fortified premises in the last over 20 years, at 9.05 p.m. Some vehicles on the premises are thought to have suffered damage. It was being ascertained if any police official got injured in the blast.

High profile

Before his elevation to the rank of ADGP last year, Mr. Sahai held two challenging but successful tenures as IGP Kashmir. On account of his high profile in planning and executing counter-insurgency operations, as also neutralising the violent street turmoil of 2010, Mr. Sahai has been figuring on top of the militants’ hit lists.
