West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan on Sunday said there could be no division of the State. “Darjeeling is a very important part of Bengal. It is very unfortunate that there is a move to divide it [Bengal],” he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.
The strike called by the GJM) leadership in Darjeeling hills in support of its statehood demand entered its ninth day on Sunday. “From ocean to snow it is Bengal. You cannot cut out portions of it and say it is Bengal,” Mr. Narayanan said. He expressed the hope that the crisis arising from the GJM agitation would be resolved soon.
Elsewhere, Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy said the government had made clear its views on the situation. “We hope good sense will prevail [on the agitators] and the divisive movement in the hills will end,” he said.
