Gogoi unveils Guwahatipolice commissionerate

January 02, 2015 01:43 am | Updated 01:43 am IST - Guwahati:

Additional Director-General of Police Jyotirmoy Chakravarty on Thursday took charge as the city’s first police commissioner. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the Guwahati police commissionerate was unveiled on New Year’s Day.

The move was announced by Mr. Gogoi after nine synchronised blasts were triggered, during his previous tenure, by the National Democratic Front of Boroland on October 30, 2008 — three in Guwahati, three in Kokrajhar, one in Bongaigaon and two at Barpeta Road — which claimed 102 lives.

Mr. Gogoi said the commissionerate had been created to serve the citizens better and “not to give more power to the police.”
