Gogoi to resign, but Virbhadra won’t

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced on Wednesday that he will hand over his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday even as his Himachal Pradesh counterpart Virbhadra Singh, who too was in Delhi, refused to take responsibility for the Congress’s poor performance in the State in the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Singh said there was no question of resigning as “it was a defeat of the party, not the Chief Minister.”

In sharp contrast to Mr. Singh’s refusal to step down from the CM’s chair, Mr. Gogoi told journalists, “I have sought an appointment to meet the Congress president. If I get it tomorrow [Thursday], I will submit my resignation to her.” He added that he did not know whether Ms. Gandhi will accept his resignation or not as he has not spoken to her yet.
