The newly appointed Special Judge under the Prevention of Corruption Act, B.P. Deshpande, on Friday fixed November 1 as the date for hearing of final arguments on the petition, filed by activist lawyer Aires Rodrigues, against Rajendra Arlekar, Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, in the disproportionate assets case.

The case was fixed on Friday for judgment by Judge P.V. Sawaikar of the CBI Court, but he was earlier this week divested of his powers to hear matters under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

In another case, Judge Deshpande has fixed for November 1 the trial of former Director of Prosecution Shobha Dhumaskar in a corruption case. After hearing a complaint filed by Mr. Rodrigues, the CBI Court last month had directed Ms. Dhumaskar to face trial as there was sufficient material to prima facie establish commission of an offence by the former Director of Prosecution punishable under section 13(2) read with Sections 13(1) (d) (i) and (ii) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
