The Foreigner’s Branch of the Goa police is busy compiling information of foreigners, including Nigerians, without travel documents by seeking verifications from various police stations across the State.
A list mentioning the names and the crimes committed by such illegally staying foreign nationals would be prepared and forwarded to the respective Embassies soon.
Deputy Inspector General of Police O.P. Mishra told The Hindu on Monday that while all the 52 Nigerians arrested in October 31 highway blocking and ruckus case have been granted bail, only 11 of them have been released as they had fulfilled all the conditions of bail including submitting their travel documents for verification. The rest would be released as and when they clear the formalities.
Scrutiny on
As for the document verification, Mr. Mishra said scrutiny of documents of all the 52 Nigerians was going on.
Once the police get the list of those who are unable to submit legal travel documents, their details would be sent to various police stations to seek details of the crimes registered against them and the list would be compiled.
“Once we get a clear picture, we would forward the list to authorities for further action,” Mr. Mishra said.
Sources in the police said the next step would be to forward the list to Nigerian Embassy through the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The issue of Nigerians among other foreign nationals living in the State without proper valid documents came into focus following a recent murder of a Nigerian at Parra in north coastal Goa on October 30. The murder led to outrage among fellow Nigerians and over 150 of them resorted to violent protests.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had said all the foreigners who stay without valid documents and indulge in all kinds of illegal activities would be deported.
