Former Goa Education Minister and unattached MLA Atanasio Monserrate alias Babush, against whom a case of raping a minor girl was registered on Wednesday, was formally arrested by the Crime Branch of the Goa police on Thursday.

He will be produced in court on Friday, police sources said.

‘Strong evidence’

“We have strong evidence against Babush. We have collected digital, circumstantial and forensic evidence,” Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch, Karthik Kashyap told presspersons.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Monserrate surrendered at the police station.

According to the police, the victim had complained that two of her close relatives delivered her to the accused for a consideration of Rs. 50 lakh. The girl was employed by the MLA.
