Echo in capital: Supporters of Gorkhaland raise slogans during a protest march in New Delhi on Sunday.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) is preparing for a prolonged underground armed movement for a separate State and has hired Maoists from neighbouring countries as mercenaries to train its cadre, according to senior West Bengal government officials.

“We have inputs from intelligence agencies that Maoists from neighbouring countries have been hired by the GJM and that it may target government properties and senior police and administrative officials, so as to aggravate the situation,” Additional Director General of Police-Law and Order Anuj Sharma told the PTI.

A senior official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the GJM has hired 25-30 Maoists mercenaries to train its cadre. “The GJM has a huge cache of arms and ammunition. They have stockpiled arms over the last few years,” said the official.

Baseless charge: Giri

The GJM refuted the allegations. “These are completely baseless statements made to derail the democratic movement,” GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said.

Meanwhile, the GJM-sponsored indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling entered its 39th day. There was no fresh violence or arson anywhere in the hills.
