Life in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal was severely affected on Wednesday, first day of the four-day bandh called by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha to press the Centre to clarify its stand on the demand for Gorkhaland to be carved out of the hills and certain areas in north Bengal.

“The bandh was total and spontaneous in the Darjeeling hills and pockets in the Terai and the Dooars,” GJM assistant general secretary Benoy Tamang told The Hindu on the phone from Darjeeling.
