Girl allegedly raped by old man

A 70-year-old man, identified as Mohammad Kora of Waithou Sangomshang has been charged with raping a 13-year-old girl in Thoubal district on January 19. The victim’s father, a rickshaw-puller at Thoubal market, was at work when the incident happened.

Talking to journalists on Friday, secretary of Young Women Help K. Sobita said a complaint had been lodged with the organisation by the victim’s father. He had stated that the accused used to often come to his house begging for small items. The accused came to the house when he was absent and allegedly raped the girl. Ms. Sobita demanded suitable action against the accused as sex-related crimes have been on the increase in Manipur.

Police have also registered a case and are investigating.

Mother stabs infant to death

A young woman, stated to be mentally imbalanced, allegedly stabbed her one and half month son on Thursday night. The seriously injured baby was rushed to a private hospital here but died on Friday morning.

Police have arrested the woman, identified as Ibemma of Moirang Lamkhai in Bishnupur district.

Security up after blasts

Police have stepped up security measures in the valley districts following three bomb blasts in Imphal on Friday. The insurgents succeeded in penetrating the maximum security 1 Manipur Rifles camp at 7 a.m. and triggered a blast which damaged windowpanes and buildings of some offices.

The other blasts had occurred in two other areas.

Insurgent groups in Manipur have called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations.
