Congress Member of Parliament from the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency Gourav Gogoi on Monday urged the Centre to expedite the hydropower and various infrastructure projects on the Brahmaputra so that India can assert its equitable user rights over the river’s water whenever the country entered any pact with China on sharing water.
The first time MP – son of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi – alleged that the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre had not focused on the Brahmaputra in its maiden budget to ensure India’s user rights on the river.
“The Modi government announced projects for the Ganga, but did not listen to prayers of thousands of people from Assam who take a dip in holy waters of the Ganga, seeking end to their woes as victims of recurring ravaging flood and erosion caused by the river Brahmaputra,” he alleged.
Mr. Gogoi said he was for using hydropower to meet the energy requirement, but clarified that safety of the dams of such hydropower projects must be ensured.
