Garo woman shot dead for resisting rape

June 04, 2014 11:28 pm | Updated 11:28 pm IST - Guwahati:

A 35-year-old Garo woman in South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya had her head blown off by suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants on Tuesday evening as she resisted their rape attempt, a top police official said on Wednesday.

The victim’s minor children were witness to the attack that took place at their home at Goera Rongat village.

Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) H. Nongpluh told The Hindu that the culprits fired five or six shots on her head with AK-series rifles around 6 p.m. The militants, numbering five or six, kept her husband confined inside the house.

The police say the GNLA, fighting for the formation of a Garoland out of Meghalaya, has been killing civilians and security personnel and carrying out abductions and extortion to let loose a reign of terror.

The group was formed in 2009.
