More than 5,000 litres of milk was used on the occasion in Berhampur.

An immersion ceremony of a 30-foot Ganesha idol was conducted in the city with large quantities of milk on Friday night.

This ceremony was held at the Ganesh Puja pandal at Ram Nagar square in Aska road area of Berhampur. As per the organisers, as milk is considered a symbol of purity, they had decided to dissolve the large earthen idol of lord Ganesha using milk rather than immersing it in a water body.

As the idol was 30.6 feet high, large quantities of milk were needed to dissolve it. The organisers claimed that most of the milk used for the purpose had been donated by the devotees.

As per an assessment more than 5000 litres of milk was used for the purpose. Through sprinklers placed around the idol, the milk was poured gradually to make the earthen idol disintegrate slowly. It took nearly five hours for completion of this ceremony.

A large crowd had gathered to witness this ceremony. Traffic was clogged for few hours on NH59 due to this crowd.
