Rich tributes were paid to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of the platinum jubilee of his setting up of the Sewagram Ashram in Wardha district, about 80 kms from Nagpur, today.

Prayers, singing of bhajans, meditation, spinning of Khadi (thread) and lectures marked the occasion at the abode of the Father of the Nation, founded on this day in 1936 during the freedom struggle movement

Though top leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and other Central leaders did not turn up, Gandhians from in and around Sewagram flocked to Ashram, early today.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Manikrao Thakre along with State ministers Shivajirao Moghe (Social Justice), Dr Nitin Raut (Employment Guarantee Scheme), Minister of State for Power Rajendra Mulak were among those present at the Ashram.

Gandhi’s great grandson Tushar, activist M M Desarda, and former MP Jambuwantrao Dhote were also present on the occasion.
