The Hindu A file picture of Gandhian activist Madhuri Krishnaswami who was arrested for fighting against the injustice meted out to adviasis in Madhya Pradesh.

Madhuri Krishnaswamy, leader of Jagrit Adivasi Dalit Sangathan (JADS) which works for health and labour rights in south-western Madhya Pradesh, was remanded in judicial custody for a fortnight on Thursday.

Ms. Krishnaswamy, popularly called Madhuri Ben, and four others were summoned by Judicial Magistrate First Class D.P. Singh Sewach in Barwani in connection with a 2008 case of rioting and assaulting a public servant.

The police had filed a closure report in the case for lack of evidence, but the court, taking cognisance of the testimony of plaintiff Vijay Chouhan, summoned the respondents. Only Ms. Krishnaswamy appeared before the court and was sent to the Khargone Women’s Prison after she refused to seek bail. Two of the four others are already on bail. The others are expected to be arrested soon.

In 2008, Ms. Krishnaswamy alerted the health and police officials after a tribal woman gave birth to a child on the road after being evicted from a primary health centre by compounder Chouhan, who also filed the case against the JADS. He was suspended only to be reinstated later.

JADS activists picketed at six police stations in Barwani district on Friday. Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh was also in the district for the Congress’ Parivartan Yatra.

“We told him that arresting a person who exposed the government is injustice. He said he had spoken to the Chief Secretary. We also told him that we are only getting Rs. 22 to Rs. 26 as MGNREGA wages [instead of the stipulated Rs. 100],” Harsing Jamre of JADS told The Hindu.

District Superintendent of Police R.C. Burra said, “We had to arrest her as the court ordered it... He [Mr. Ramesh] asked about her and we gave him all the details of the case.”

Ms. Krishnaswamy is scheduled to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate on May 30.

Selfless social workers are a threat to the vested interests associated
with crony capitalism, hence all 'stake holders' easily form a syndicate
to protect what they have earned and potential earnings in the future.
Action initiated against the Gandhian is an attempt to cremate such
movements fighting for the rights of the marginalized and to ensure
there would be none in future to raise the voice. In reality, every step
/ misstep like this is a sure signal for national disunity. A nation
exists only in the minds of the people.

This is amazing. Gandhian will be arrested and sent to jail for protests and petty offenses while serious criminals will be arrested and sent home on bail or to attend children's weddings and other function. We need to feel good about our systems.

Dear Sir,
National news papers and national TV focus on Madhya Pradesh only when things go very wrong.
Madhya Pradesh has its own mining mafia, and political-builder nexus.

Madhuri Ben is a well known social worker. This is harassment and threat to social activist.

I request you to kindly cover other problems of Madhya Pradesh too.

The district officials are known BUTCHERS as they are mostly political
cronies of a POLITICAL PARTY.
I visited several the so called Primary Health Centers in coastal
districts in Andhra Pradesh and their lives depends on the WHIMS of
local politicians who are mostly IGNORANT of facts of Health. Until this
attitude is CHANGED and progressive steps to be taken if they want to
provide health care to needy poor people in districts.

Sad and bad it is to arrest activist for helping the tribal folks; and
then pretend all in order - solid fact of tribal woman sent away from
hospital as she could not bribe the official is well known, but now they
pretend otherwise; even Jairam Ramesh unable to set things right; Pity;
Time Govt ensures corruption rampant in hospitals ends at once to help
the poor and needy; Who will act ; let us see !!
