‘Gairsain to become Uttarakhand’s summer capital’

November 11, 2014 02:54 am | Updated 02:54 am IST - Dehradun:

Gairsain, a village in Chamoli district, is being developed as the summer capital of the State.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat said, “We are developing Gairsain [as the summer capital]. I will be in a position to make an official announcement only after the work [which is underway in Gairsain] finishes.” He was speaking on the sidelines of a function to mark the State’s 14th Foundation Day on Sunday. “The Vidhan Sabha building has been constructed. Work to build the Secretariat will start soon,” Mr Rawat said. In June, this year, a Vidhan Sabha session was conducted at Gairsain, which is close to some Kumaon districts.

During the Uttarakhand movement, agitators wanted Gairsain to be the capital for inclusive growth of the hilly areas. However, Dehradun was made the provisional state capital.
