After an exhibition of Abanindranath Tagore’s paintings at Victoria Memorial Hall here got a phenomenal response, a catalogue featuring over 100 paintings by his brother and pioneer of the Bengal School of Art, Gaganendranath Tagore (1867-1938), will be released here on Monday.

The paintings, belonging to the Rabindra Bharati Society and acquired by the Victoria Memorial Hall on a long-term loan, were showcased at the venue in 2012. Renowned for his modernist experiments with the brush, Gaganendranath Tagore — Rabindranath Tagore’s nephew — was known for his satirical works based on the then prevailing social norms.

“The catalogue contains colour reproductions of 108 paintings by Gaganendranath Tagore, all of which were showcased in a three-month-long exhibition [in 2012]. It also carries a text by [Director, L.D. Museum and N.C. Mehta Gallery, Ahmedabad] Ratan Parimoo who was the curator of the exhibition. Prof. Parimoo will deliver a lecture on the artistic vision of Abanindranath and Gaganendranath Tagore at the inaugural event of the catalogue,” VMH secretary and curator Jayanta Sengupta told The Hindu . Priced at Rs. 600, the catalogue will be available in paperback form.
