Furore over MLA’s remarks in Assembly

December 25, 2014 09:37 am | Updated 09:37 am IST - CHANDIGARH:

The issue of some objectionable remarks made by Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha, which were subsequently expunged by Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal, dominated the proceedings of the Punjab Assembly on the third and concluding day of the Winter Session.

After Question Hour, Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar of the Congress gave a notice of breach of privilege against Mr. Valtoha for the remarks he made on Tuesday but it was not accepted by the Speaker who said it had been received by him only this morning and so it could not be accepted since ideally it should have been given in writing to the Secretary before the commencement of the sitting of the House for the day.

The Congress MLAs then continued their protest on the issue and demanded that Mr. Valtoha be suspended.
