Freedom fighter to be honoured

The country will honour freedom fighter Rani Gaidinlu by bringing out commemorative Rs.100 and Rs.5 coins on January 26. The Rs.5 coin issued in her honour is for mass circulation.

She had revolted against the British occupation from the age of 13 years. In recognition of her contribution to the freedom movement, she was given the title Rani.

Besides she was conferred Padma Bhushan in 1993. Born on January 15, 1915, Rani of Zeliangrong tribe had revolted against the British in Manipur. She was arrested in 1932 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

However after Independence she was released. Though the British had announced a reward of Rs.500 for her arrest, people had protected her.
