A fourth Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) militant was killed on Monday in an operation in Baramulla’s Uri, where a group of freshly infiltrated fidayeen (suicide squad) was trapped on Sunday.

“The fourth militant was killed in the operation that was resumed on Monday morning,” said Director General of Police (DIG), J&K, S.P. Vaid.

Three militants were killed in a fierce gunfight on Sunday as militants fanned out in a residential area. An Army spokesman said the operation continues as “more militants are suspected to be hiding in the area”.

Uri is close to the Line of Control (LoC) and connects the Kashmir valley with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).

Four residential houses also suffered damage during the gun battle.

“The militants were trying to carry out a major attack at an Army camp,” Deputy Commander, Uri Brigade, Harpreet Singh said. “We plan to clear the entire sector.”

AK-47 rifles, AK-47 magazines, hand grenades and other ammunition were recovered from the militants.
