Four dead, 15 missing as rain water floods dam site in Meghalaya

At least four labourers were killed and some 15 others were missing as rains water flooded the construction site of the Myntdu-Leshka Hydel project in Meghalaya Jaintia Hills district, official sources said on Friday.

The labourers were trapped in a tunnel when there was sudden overflow of water. Four bodies were recovered on Friday, while some 15 were still missing, Jaintia Hills deputy commissioner T Dkhar said.

Incessant rains since the last couple of days led to overflowing of water and also triggered landslides at the construction site of ambitious Rs 900 crore 84 MW project.

The state electricity board officials said the dam was nearing completion.

The main power house was submerged under water last evening but the situation was improving after water receded, according to latest reports.

According to reports, the possibility of more loss of life cannot be ruled out.

A team comprising police personnel were conducting a rescue operation in the area.

The Deputy Commissioner said the exact damage caused by the overflowing was yet to be ascertained.
