Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday lashed out at rival political parties for trying to corner her government right from the day she assumed office in June 1995.
The Bahujan Samaj Party chief said she knew how to take the fight into the rival camp as she had come up the hard way. “No force on earth can isolate me in this fight,” she said addressing BSP workers here.
Ms. Mayawati accused the Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party of having tried to destabilise her government through the first three terms, during which her the BSP depended on them for survival. Her troubles did not end even in this fourth term, from 2007, though her party won an absolute majority in the 403-member Assembly.
The Congress was only following BJP's strategy to nail her government, encouraging people to file public interest litigation petitions, she said. She had been fighting court cases as the Congress was magnifying trivial issues. The latest in the series was the controversy over construction of parks and other monuments for great sants and gurus.
Ms. Mayawati recalled how the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance harassed her, forcing her to quit, taking the help of the Central Bureau of Investigation to institute an inquiry into alleged corruption charges against her in the Taj corridor case. The conspiracy continued during the Congress regime and she got a reprieve only from the Supreme Court, she said.
Ms. Mayawati said her problems began in June 1995 when “criminal elements” mobilised by the SP, with which she shared power, went to the extent of trying to kill her. But she escaped with the blessings of public.
