At least 21 people were killed and several injured in floods and a thunderstorm that lashed Assam over the past three days, official sources said on Monday.

Six people died after being hit by lightning in lower Assam's Dhubri district, while another six died in Cachar district, an official release said. While three persons died in Nagaon district and two in Kamrup (Metro), one person each died in Goalpara, Nalbari, Morigaon and Karimganj districts.

The situation remains critical as many parts of Assam are still inundated by the waters of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries.
