At least five persons were killed and six were injured in an explosion in the Kotwali police station area of West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district.

According to the police, a bicycle bomb, which was placed on a culvert at Bajrapara, went off at 7 p.m., killing passersby.

KLO suspected

Police suspect the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation — an outfit demanding a separate State to be carved out of certain districts in north Bengal and lower Assam — to be behind the explosion.

Casualties

“We are shifting the injured to the hospital … the situation is under control,” Shashikanta Pujara, Inspector General of Police, North Bengal, told The Hindu over telephone.

The injured have been admitted to the Jalpaiguri District Hospital and some to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
