Seven persons were killed and seven injured when a building collapsed in suburban Mumbai on Saturday morning, only a day after a >building collapse in Mumbra , Thane, claimed 10 lives.
Piyush Society in Dahisar (East), a 30-year-old building, was declared dilapidated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) two years back. Officials said the civic body had served a notice on the residents of the building for repair works. The building was vacant but vendors from nearby stalls, who were using it as a temporary shelter, were present and four of them were killed while some were injured in the collapse, said a fire brigade official. The dead included family members of the building’s watchman.
According to locals, the building could not be redeveloped as the conveyance deed was not executed by the builder. Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam had earlier assured the residents that he would ask the builder to sign it.
Of the seven injured, two have were sent home after outpatient treatment while the rest were being treated in the BMC’s Bhagwati hospital.
