Fire engulfs slum in Mumbai

April 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - MUMBAI:

A massive fire broke out in a slum close to the Bandra railway station here on Saturday evening gutting several shacks and partially affecting local train services. No casualties, except some persons sustaining minor burns, were reported till late evening.

Fire department officials said that the fire was reported between 8.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. “We received a call from one of the locals who told us that a fire, which had started in the slum enclave of Behrampada andhads, engulfed several hutments in the area,” said a fire department official.

He said that eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Firefighting was on till 10 p.m.

Trains halted

Behrampada, a cluster of slums, is located next to the ticket counter of the Bandra station. Although the fire did not spread towards the station, trains on the Western Line, on which Bandra falls, were halted for some time.

The effect of the interrupted train services was also felt on roads close to Bandra as many commuters stranded at stations such as Dadar, Matunga and Mahim chose to hire cabs to travel to the suburbs.

The cause of the fire is not known yet.
