Female sarpanch attempts suicide

Gitanjali Nayak, the female sarpanch of Mathura panchayat attempted suicide by consuming phenyl inside office of the Polasara block office in Ganjam district of Odisha on Tuesday.

She has been admitted in Polasara Community Health Centre (CHC). According to sources, she had taken this drastic decision in front of the in charge Block Development Officer (BDO) of Polasara, T.B. Samantra with the allegation that the officials did not prevent some persons from her panchayat to misbehave with her while the panchayat samity meeting was continuing in the block office on Tuesday.

During this meeting some persons of the panchayat had entered the meeting hall with the allegation that they had not received subsidised rice meant for them and they blamed the sarpanch for it. It had led to an altercation between the sarpanch and the group. After the meeting ended, this altercation again sparked off outside the block office.

Irked by it, Ms. Nayak had rushed inside the chamber of the BDO and sat on the floor with the allegation that the officials did not protect her. She had taken out a bottle of phenyl from her vanity bag and consumed it. The block officials had immediately intervened and made her vomit. She was admitted into the local hospital.
