March 11, 2015 02:55 pm | Updated 02:56 pm IST - MUMBAI:

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday came under fire from the Opposition parties after he

left for Nagpur on Tuesday to attend a wedding in the family of a BJP MP, skipping discussion on unseasonal rains and farmers' distress in the State.

"The chief minister has insulted farmers by leaving the session midway to attend a wedding in the family of a rich businessman MP of the BJP," Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said.

Mr. Munde added that the state and lakhs of farmers are suffering from serious drought."The situation has gone from bad to worse due to unseasonal rains. Attending the wedding at such a time is nothing but purely disrespect shown to farmers," he said.

Mr. Fadnavis however had said at the airport while leaving for the wedding that the discussion on farming distress will not be ignored and one should not find other meanings as he is attending the wedding in Nagpur. He had gone to attend the wedding of nephew of BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Ajay Sancheti.

On Tuesday, the opposition had demanded discussion on unseasonal rains on in the state and the damage caused to crops due to it.
