Ex-Cong MLA seeks probe

March 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - CHANDIGARH:

Even as he rejected allegations of providing sanctuary to Gurdev Singh who was arrested on Monday on charges of smuggling drugs and gold, former Congress legislator Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Tuesday demanded an “independent” probe.

The police had claimed on Monday to have arrested “kingpin” of a smuggling network Gurdev along with seven others who were reported to be active along the Indo-Pakistan border in Fazilka district. The allegations against Mr Khaira have surfaced at a time when reports indicate that he may join the Aam Admi Party.

While accepting that Gurdev had been his associate for many years, he refuted charges made IGP P.S. Umranangal that he had tried to save the accused. Mr Khaira alleged that a ‘troika” comprising Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, DGP Sumedh Singh Saini and former Akali minister Jagir Kaur, who represents Bholath constituency, had been together in conspiracy to gag him and malign his political career.
