The West Bengal government on Thursday set up a four-member committee to probe the trawler capsize in Muriganga river on Saturday, to fix responsibility for the incident.
The trawler was recovered on Thursday — four days after its capsize, in which manydrowned. So far, 83 bodies have been retrieved, State Home Secretary G.D. Gautama told reporters at the Secretariat.
He said that no bodies were found trapped in the trawler. Inclement weather had hampered rescue operations badly for the first two days since the incident on Saturday.
Mr. Gautama said that the enquiry committee would fix responsibility for the incident and probe its cause. The committee, which is set to give its report within a month, will give recommendations so as to avoid the recurrence of such incidents.
The status of the vessel and whether it had a valid licence to ply with passengers will also be investigated, Mr. Gautama said after a series of meetings with the Chief Secretary.
The committee would be headed by the Divisional Commissioner, Presidency Range. He said that rescue operations would continue.
