A wild elephant strayed into Bihar from Nepal and killed three people in Sitamarhi district. Officials said the condition of one of the three injured is critical.

District officials told The Hindu that the elephant crossed the Indo-Nepal border on Tuesday morning and entered the Harpurva village of Sitamarhi causing panic among villagers.

The frightened pachyderm later trampled to death three people, including a police driver, Hulas Rai who were chasing away the animal with the help of villagers.

“Three other villagers were also seriously injured and admitted to the district hospital and the condition of one of them remains critical”, said Sashi Shekhar, district Divisional Forest Officer.

Meanwhile, a team of forest department officials from Patna has reached Sitamarhi to catch the elephant, he added.

According to eye-witnesses, the elephant has now entered the adjoining Madhubani district and was seen roaming in areas under the Arer police station.

“The forest department officials and the police officials have reached the place and they are trying to tranquilize the animal”, said Mr Shekhar.
